From PVC to Shower Curtains to Disposable Diapers
Thoughts of plastic wrap or PVC is something we do not think about when we are bathing in the tub or taking a shower. The only considerations we have at the moment is relaxing a minute or two while cleansing our body and soul, planning out our day, remembering what we need to accomplish and what we are going to wear.
But if we were to stop and think for a moment what it would be like to wash and accomplish our daily personal hygiene tasks without using vinyl products we would quickly find out how difficult it would be to keep water from getting all over the bathroom floor and splashing on the walls when we shower.
Fortunately, we do not have to think about this thanks to a U.S. scientist, Waldo Semon, whom at the time was employed at BF Goodrich, discovered that by combining polymers with plasticizers the result was a flexible plastic we refer to as vinyl. Semon�s suggested that this new elastic material be used to coat fabrics making them waterproof. He further determined that when PVC was softened; its flexible sheets would be ideal for many useful applications. In 1931 many products were introduced to the market including raincoats, garden hoses and shower curtains.
From the advent of the shower curtain a creative Connecticut housewife and mother, Marion Donovan, had grown tired of cleaning soaked babies, their clothing and crib linens as a consequence she used her creative imagination and tore down her bathroom shower curtain. Donovan used a cloth diaper and used it as a pattern, cut a piece of the shower curtain which made a waterproof diaper cover. Her innovative design is used and loved by millions of people world wide and what we know today as the disposable diaper.
